044 | The remains of an ancient sacred edifice, founded about the year 1244 by Duncan Earl of Carrick. Situated on the public road between Ayr & Girvan about 2 miles & ½ East of Kirkoswald village, The walls of the church and Choir are still standing to the height of 16 feet. The principal altar stood in the eastern part of the Choir. On the right of this stands the vestry-room & Abbot's ecclesiastical court-cell entire; and arched above, the roof of the latter is supported by a single column.[Curving] groined vaults intersecting each other and forming acute angles. "The Abbey of Crossraguel was founded in 1244; but the
building was probably not completed for some years afterwards.
It has long been in ruins, though great care is now taken to preserve
what remains. Abercrummie says, 'the fabryck of the Church is entyre,
without a roofe. Much of the building is demolished, yet there be
two towers still standing entyre in their walls.' It is at least 160 years
since Abercrummie wrote, and his description of the ruins might
serve for the present day. The great injury sustained by the building
seems to have been inflicted at the time of the Reformation. The Abbey
stands midway between Maybole and Kirkoswald - about two miles
distant from each. the public road from Ayr to Portpatrick passes
along the north side of the precincts. The situation as Abercrummie
observes, 'is noways pleasant' - yet it was well selected in
