050 | An ancient fort or Camp Situated on the upper edge of a Steep natural Slope on the top of Dowhill Mount. The centre is a level circular Space of about 40 feet in diameter, Surrounded by a banK of earth or rampart, which on the inside is about 5 feet high with a Steep Slope, level on top and having an outer Slope of about 45 degrees and about 25 feet in height from the ditch. The bottom of which is about 3 feet lower than the natural Surface Outside the ditch and immediately Surrounding it is a breastworK about 5 feet in height. The ditch and breastwork terminate in the Steep natural Slope to the west, facing the Sea.The whole of the worKs are earth. no Stone having been, apparently, used in their Construction. On the Same hill and immediately east of this a quantity of human bones were found Some years ago by worKmen employed in agricultural purposes. It is not precisely Known at what time this fort was Constructed but the prevailing opinion in the neighbourhood is that it was in Connection with Bruce's or Turnberry Castle.- |
