050 Forming part of an elevated ridge of land
running parallel to the water of Girvan. And about 3/4 of a mile west of it. A coal field extend round the whole of this elevation, which was wrought by numerous shafts, long since abandoned. A fire broke out in one of the pits about the year 1796 And continued to burn upwards of 70 years while the seam of coal was entirely burned away. From this circumstance the hill derives it's name.
