According to tradition it was built by a nephew of Robert Bruce in the year 1335.- It would appear to have been exceedingly Strong, the walls yet remaining are over three feet in thicKness, two Storeys high & in a tolerable State of preservation. Culzean Kennels adjacent, and recently built, Stand on the Site of part of the old building & the Same Stone used in their Construction. |

extent. It was inhabited fifty years ago, and is now the property of
the Earl of Cassillis" Statistical Account (1842)
"Thomaston Castle seems to have consisted principally of a strong
tower, and to have had a moat around it. There are remains of an extensive
orchard in the vicinity" Pattersons History of Ayrshire (published 1847)
