045 The Site of an Old British Camp or Fortlet, Circular in form, and about 3 chains in diameter. It is quite level with the general surface and is Situated on the W. [West] base of Guiltree Hill. There have been no excavations made, but when it was first ploughed over; which was about fifty years ago, there was a part of an old Spear found in it. There are," says the Statistical Account, traces of five British or Danish fortlets, and are supposed to belong to the early period of the fourteenth Century. This must be a mistake for the fourth century, because, whether British or Danish, their era must be much earlier than the fourteenth Century. There is every reason to believe, as the Roman road from Galloway to Ayr traverses the Course of the Doon at no great distance, that they are
