" The Origin of Kilmarnock, like that of " many other towns of importance, is "involved in Considerable obscurity; "and Scarcely any thing regarding its "ancient history can be gathered from "the various Statistical Works in which " it is mentioned, That it is a place of "great Antiquity, however, Seems to be " the general opinion, It is stated by "Some Writers that, So far back as the " year 322, it was the residence of a "Saint Marnoc or Marnock, from whom " its name is derived. But it is more "probable that the Saint Settled here "about the end of the Sixth or the "beginning of the Seventh Century, "when Some of the early preachers of "Christianity, who had been educated "at I-colum-kill, under the Columba, "established places of Religious Worship " in different parts of our Island, Here "according to tradition, St. Marnock " founded a Church, and hence, in all " likelihood, the Origin of the town; for " those who were seeking or had "enjoyed his holy instructions Would "naturally incline to Settle at or near "the hallowed Scene of his labours. It is "also said that he was interred here " within the precincts of the ground he "had consecrated. Kilmarnock for a long [Carried Forward]

[Reverend] James Aitken Mr A Hamilton Town Clerk Mr James Hamilton Name cut on the Monument Patterson's Hist.[History] of Ayrshire McKay's Hist.[History] of Kilmarnock 018 This is a handsome fluted pillar Surmounted by an Urn or Vase, Which was erected to the Memory of "Lord Soulis" an English nobleman, who, it is Said was Killed by One of the Boyd family in A.D. 1444. It Stands in a niche of the Wall which Surrounds the High Church, at the head of Soulis Street, and fronting that Street, And on the Spot it is believed where he fell;- prior to 1825 it was a Slender Stone pillar, eight or nine feet high, but of very rude Appearance, being entirely Without Architectural finish or Ornament, except a Small Cross which was fixed upon its top;- at that date it was tottering with Age, and Some of the more respectable inhabitants of the Street in which it Stands. Collected a Small Sum of Money Among themselves, for rebuilding it in a Style more in harmony with modern taste. Paterson makes mention of this Monument in his history of Ayrshire.- In the Town of Kilmarnock itself there are a few Vestiges of Antiquity, the most remarKable is that of Soulis' Cross.
