018 A Substantial building Situated in Morton Place, With a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station on its Summit. ;- Was erected by the Proprietor, Thomas Morton Esq at an expende of about £1000, from whom it takes its name. The height is about 711 feet Above the general Surface, and being on an elevated Situation it commands an expensive & beautiful range of View, it is furnished with two excellent telescopes of different Sizes. The large One which is Constructed on the Newtonian Principle, is 9 ¾ Inches in diameter. The office is of the Gregorian Construction, and is Seven inches in diameter. They are both the Construction of the Proprietor, who has obtained considerable Celebrity as an ingenious Mechanic, And are fine specimens of Mechanison.- In the Observatory there is Also a Camera Obscura, which can be Seen to Advantage on a Clear day & which makes the place very Attractive,-
Till recently there was no person excluded from Visiting free of expense, this Observatory, but Owing to the immense Outlay which it had Cost, and as many felt a delicacy in Visiting it, So Often as they could have Wished, when invited gratuitously, the Proprietor has been induced to Appoint a Competent Persons to Wait upon Visitors and to make the following Charges, Subscribers, with families 5/- p [£0.5.0 per] annum. Non Subscribers 1/- [£0.1.0] Ladies /6d. [£0.0.6] -
