An ancient SWORD FOUND HERE IN 1845 [North Knockinglaw] 018 It was in one of the fields of this farm (see Trace 3) that the old 'Sword' was found, which is mentioned in 'Pattersons History of Ayrshire' Patterson in quoting that account, from 'McKays History of Kilmarnock' confuses both date and incident, he states the Sword was found in in 1825, and compiles it with the murder of Lord Soulis, whereas the Sword was found in 1845 (as Mr Clark is only 11 Years in the place) and the encounter between Lord Boyd and Lord Soulis is said to have taken place about the spot where Lord Soulis monument now stands.

"Tradition states that Lord Soulis was an English
"Nobleman, and that he was killed by an arrow from the
"crossbow of on of the Boyd family. McKay, in his 'History of
"Kilmarnock' gives the tradition at length, and mentions, in
"evidence of the Skirmish which is said to have taken place between
"the contending parties, that in 1825, Mr. Clark, farmer of Knockinlaw, and
"when cutting a drain near the spot where the encounter is said to
"have happened, found at a considerable depth beneath the surface
