018 | This was once a Small Farmhouse it is now occupied by a Cottager, James Meikle of Caprickhill is Tenant, and it is the property of the Heirs of the late John Morton. Holmhead was once the Residence and property of a man called Tom Rayburn or the "Ayrshire Hermit". From the account given of Tom by those who were personally acquainted with him and now residing in the neighbourhood, it appears that Tom claimed a light to pass thro [through] the Caprickhill Farm which was disputed as Tom's own land, joined the Public Road. a lawsuit ensued and was decided against him. Tom considered the decision unjust and vowed that he would never of have or change his dress till the decision was reversed, which, never occured, therefore, he continued to wear his beard and patch the clothes he wore at the time he made this vow for about 20 years to the end of his life which terminated about 12 years ago. it is supposed he died worth about [£2000]. |
