017 Originally this Port or Gate closed the High Street from the end of Glasgow Vennel west side its site has been pointed out by Mr Robert Montgomerie Collector of customs who has still in his possession a stone dated 1594 and marked also A P A.S which was on one of the Pillars in his early days. the Site of the gate or Port is also well authenticated by David Grey Town clerk Mr Maxwell Dick & Provost Campbell. - in fact is generally known to the inhabitants of Irvine.
