017 | This building is situated in the High Street between Kirkgate and Bridgegate it is a long narrow building having a Tower and clock and a flight of Steps at either Side South end This building was erected about the year1745 it contains Council chambers Town clerks office Court Hall and apartments or cells for criminals and police office Offenders are only temporary confined here at present previous to their removal to Ayr. There is an inscription on South Side of Tower dated 1710 which proves that the tower part of this Structure was erected previous to the main body of the building |
