017 | The portion of this town within the parish of Irvine comprises several Streets the principle one of which extending from the Townhead T. [Toll] Bar in a Northerly direction to the end of Burn Street is a most excellent thoroughfare in the centre of this street between Kirkgate & Bridgegate is the Jail and Town Hall rather an ornament to this portion of the town and not seemingly an obstacle to traffic the Streets of this town are kept Remarkably clean and with the exception of the dwellings on part of the Townhead the remainder are substantial Stone dwellings inhabited principally by tradespeople Irvine is a Royal Burgh both Municipal and Parliamentary there is also a Weekly Market and 3 Fairs Annually Monday is the Market day and the Fairs are First Wednesdy of Jan y [January] First Tuesdy in May & 3rd Mondy and Wednesdy in August |
