055 | A Market and post Town & also a burgh of barony by Charter the powers of which although regularly handed down were never acted on till the Year 1785 when this Town assumed the form of a burgh of barony.- The houses are generally one storey high of which several are thatched, there are a good many two storey and but few three storey buildings - The principle Manufacture is Cotton weaving which gives employment to a great number of the inhabitants. Public buildings are the Parish Church, Burgh Meeting House, Cameronian and Unitarian Chapels, Methodist Chapel, Free Church & School, Parish Shool and Town Hall - Property of the Duchesse de Coigney.- |
