055 | A market and post town and [also] a burgh of Barony by Charter [the] powers of which although iregu[larly] handed down were never acted [upon ?] till the year 1785 when this town assumed the form of a [burgh] of barony. The houses are [generally]one storey high of which [several] are thatched there are a good [many] two storey and but few three storey buildings. The principal [Manufacturing] is Cotton weaving which gives [employment] to a great number of the [inhabitants]. Public buildings are Parish [Church] [Anti?] Burgher Meeting House, Cameronian & [Unitarian]Chapels, Methodist Chapel, [Free Church] School, Parish School, & Town Hall - property of the Duchesse de Coigney. |
