A parish in the district of Cunningham, in the Co. [County] of Ayr. It is bounded in the north and Northeast by the County of Renfrew. On the east by Loudon, on the South by Kilmarnock, and on the W. [West] and N.W. [North West] by Stewarton. Its extream length about 10 Miles, average width about 5 miles.
In Patersons History of Ayr it is stated "There can be little doubt that Chalmers is correct in deriving the name of this parish from the Anglo-Saxon, Fen-wick, signifying the village at the feu or marsh. The marshy nature of the surrounding country, though now partly drained and improved, amply supports the accuracy of the derivation."
The antiquities of the parish are few, and will be found described in the following pages of this book.
There is no portion of this parish detached nor is there a portion of any other within this. [J.C.G.] |

"There is a house in this parish (Fenwick) the principal Stage for travelling between Glasgow & Kilmarnock, called the Kingswell. Tradition says, that it got its name on the following occasion, One of the James's came W. [West] to settle some disputes at a place called Pothelly Hall, where are the vestiges, and no more, of an old tower. At the spot where the house now Stands, his horse drank out of a well afterwards called the Kings Well, and also went into a quagmire, which still is known by the name of the "Kings Stable" Old Statistical account |

occasion of Some feud or foray." After a long ride over some difficult ground. " "His Majesty had
acquired an appetite too sharp to be compatible with comfort. He was obliged therefore to alight
at the nearest house, which happened to be a peasant's cottage. The gudewife supplied him with very
homely cheer." He was proceeding to depart, when the good woman told him her husband was one of the prisoners
whose trial had been the main object of his journey, that he surely would have the heart to hang a man after
having eat his breakfast sitting in his armchair. This appeal the rules of hospitality rendered *
* irresistable. When he reached Pothelly Hall, he singled out the
husband of his hostess, lectured him on the impropriety of his
conduct, and dismissed him, with an admonishment to be a
better bairn. He next commenced his investigation and found 18
of the prisoners guilty, hung them forthwith on a hawthorn, which
is still pointed out, and displays obvious marks of
great antiquity." Patersons History - taken from

This monument is of Cut stone about two feet by 1½ feet at base and about 8 feet high with a pistol, Swords, drum and flag neatly carved, under these is the following inscription
Sacred to the Memory of
Captain John Paton.
Late in Meadowhead
of this Parish
who Suffered Martyrdom in the grass -market
Edinburgh May 9th. 1684.
He was an Honor to the Country, on the Continent, at Pentland. Drumclog and Bothwell.
His heroic conduct truly evinced the gallant Officer, brave soldier, and true Patriot.
In social and domestic life he was an ornament,
a pious Christian, and faithful witness for truth,
in opposition to the encroachment of the Tyrranical
and despotic power in Church and State,
The mortal remains of Captain Paton sleep
amid the dust of Hindred Martyrs in Grey-Friers Church Yard Edinburgh
Who Antichrist do thus oppose
And for truths cause their lives lay down
Will get the Victory over their foes
And gain life's everlasting crown |

An Ancient Farm House occupied by Mr. Thomas Howie, Son to the Author of the Scotch Worthies, and the property of the Marquis of Hastings. The following account copied from Robertsons History of Ayrshire corresponds with that which the present Mr. Howie gives of his family.
"Far up among the moors in the Barony of Rowallan, there is a large Sheep Farm Called Lochgoine. It has been possessed for many generations by a family by the name of Howie which from their own account fled here as refugees from the persecution raised against the Waldenses in France, and have resided in this place for some hundred years. They met with their Share of troubles here also, in the persecuting reigns of the two last Kings of the Stewart line. for with the Same unbending Spirit of their Ancestors, they resisted encroachment on the religious liberties.
There are Still preserved here the Colours, that the Covenanters of this Parish carried with them to the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, which some of them had the address to carry off Safe, and they shew also the sword of Capt. [Captain] Paton of Meadowhead and some other things which are considered as precious Relics." The other things Shewn are a drum which belonged to the Covenanters of this Parish, Capt. [Captain] Patons Bible, and Several Silver Coins of the 13th Century. [continued] over |

Lochgoyn - Continued
" There are still the decendants of another family in the Parish who sternly resisted the
oppression of the times - we mean the Howies in Lochgoin, a remote farm in the Southeastern
extremity of the parish. 'The House' Says the writer in the "Statistical Account" is altogether inaccessible
in the East to horsemen, and an active man could not, even though acquainted with the locality, at
night cross the moss by which it is defended, but at the risk of his life, and no stranger could venture
across it safely, even in daylight, without a guide." "A situation like this was invaluable
to the Covenanters, and it was a point at which the utmost vigilance and attention of the dragoons were
naturally directed - Twelve times was the house plundered, and as often did the people escape. On
such occasions, the money was removed, and buried in the neighbouring Mosses. It happened once
that they were nearly taken by Surprise, and had only time to conceal the coins, without
being able to reach the spot. In spite of all subsequent search, it remained in the moss for
more than a century, where the place was accidentally discovered. After an extensive search
Some Scores of British and foreign coins were discovered. These are preserved by the family as being
interesting relics. The Fenwick flag, which waved at Bothwell, Kilsyth and Drumclog, is
also preserved at Lochgoin.
