This parish is in the north of the district of Cunningham, in the County of Ayr; with the exception of a small portion which lies in the county of Renfrew, upon which it borders.
It is bounded on the north west, north, and east by the Parish of Neilston in Renfrewshire, on the south-east and south by Stewarton, and on north west by Beith. Its form is oblong. Its extreme length, from north east to south west is about 6 1/2 miles. Average breadth about 2 1/4 miles. The name (Dunlop) as stated in the new Statistical Account of Ayr and Bute, "is supposed to be derived from two Gaelic words, dun, a fortified height, & luib, a winding". The Antiquities of the parish, tho' [though] not numerous, are interesting, and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book -
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor is there a detached portion of any other parish within this. [initialled] WG |

This Farm comprehends part of the lands of Hapland and Ryeburn and the house and steading are built principally of the stones which composed the old house of Hapland, hence Mr. Snodgrass's wish for the name to be retained, but it is not known in the district as "Hapland", and I can give no other authorities |

At this place there formerly stood a Chapel supposed to have been dedicated to the Virgin Mary but of this there appears to be no great certainty, and I have been informed by the Revd. [Reverend] William Gebbie. Dunlop. that there is no tradition respecting it, which can be relied on. No vestige of it now remains, the ruins having been entirely removed about 25 or 30 years ago, & the ground cultivated. |

"In the vicinity of Dunlop village there was in former times,
"a Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary, which had an appropriate
" endowment, for the Support of a Chaplain. After the reformation,
"this Chapel was allowed to fall to ruins, but the remains of it are
"still to be Seen". Chalmers Caledonia 3rd Vol. [Volume] Page 556
At a place called the Chapel Craigs, about a mile from the
Village of Dunlop, there existed until lately the ruins
of a Chapel, which was dedicated to the Virgin Mary, It is not known whether
this was the parish Church before the Reformation, or a Chapel distinct from it."

Sir
I have made enquiry respecting
the "Burying Ground and Pathway"
mentioned in Patersons History
of Ayr. but have not obtained
any satisfactory information
respecting them. The Revd. [Reverend]
William Gebbie recommended me to apply
to George Howie (an old man
residing in Dunlop village) but
he had never heard of any Burying
Ground being near the Chapel; but
said that near it there was a
sort of path by which the summit
of the rocks could be reached.
I made a survey of the place a trace
of which is enclosed.
At C there is a hollow place in
the rocks, by which a kind of shelf
or terrace is reached, this leads
upwards & in some places from

This name applies to a large detached stone or boulder. lying in a field on the Farm of Brandleside. The tradition in the locality respecting it is That those who attended at the Chapel which formerly stood in the vicinity were in the habit of performing part of their devotions here, and went round it on their knees repeating a prayer commencing with the words "O Thou Grit Stane", or "Thou grit stane" which name it still retains. No person to whom I have spoken on the subject pronounce it Thugartsone as in the Statistical Accnt. [Account]. The tenant of the farm is bound in his lease not to disturb it. |

"A few hundred yards southwest of the Site of the Chapel, on the gentle swell of the hill is a
"Druidical stone, called the Thugart stane, supposed to be a corruption of the grit stane.
"It appears at one time or other to have been a rocking stone. The base is so covered with rubbish, that "
"it has now lost its vibratory motion. It lies on the farm of Brandleside and the tenant is bound
" in his tack to protect it, by neither removing it, nor adulterating the ground for a considerable number

The date of its erection is unknown, but it is said to be one of the oldest castles in Scotland, now inhabited. "At the foot of Barr Hill, on the right bank of the Glazert, stands now, with only one exception, the most ancient building in the parish - Aiket Castle. It is a strong square tower, with a side of thirty feet; it was originally four stories in height, but in modern times, has been reduced to three". "The walls at the base are upwards of seven feet thick". "In ancient times it was surrounded with a moat". Paterson's History.
"Aiket Castle, about a mile South of the church is now the oldest building in the parish. The date of its erection is not exactly known; but as a considerable branch of the Cunninghame family possessed the property of which it was the mansion for some centuries preceding 1700, about which time it passed into other hands, we may assign to it a very respectable antiquity. It consisted originally of a square tower, vaulted on the ground floor, & four or five storeys high". New Statistical Account |

Mr. R. Cochrane |
|
This name applies to a small knoll or hill, or the vestiges of such, for it appears at one time to have been higher - in the corner of a small field near the dwelling house of Aiket Mill, The tradition respecting it, which I have heard from Mr. Calderwood, proprietor of the Castle, and an old man about 80 years of age, & Messrs Cochrane of Loanhead and Gilmour of Braehead, is:- that in former times when the proprietor of the Castle resided there, he was in the habit of appointing a person to meet his "Feuars" on the "Court Hill", to receive payment of their feus etc. etc. |

An eminence in the vicinity of Dunlop, rising gradually on the South & west, but on the E.N. [East North] & N. [North] West sides is very steep & in some places rocky. On the summit - from which an extensive view of the surrounding country is obtained - a Castle is said, formerly to have stood. No vestage of it is now to be seen, but on the east side of the Hill, the remains of what appears to have been a Trench are yet distinctly visible, abt. [about] 3 chains west from this, there is a slight hollow, but whether it has been connected with the Trench cannot now be seen, as the land intervening has long since been levelled and cultivated. |

On the top of Dunlop Hill a Castle is said formerly to have stood. No vestages of it are now visible, but I was informed by Mr. George Howie (an old man residing in Dunlop) that about 70 or 80 years ago he remembers seeing a small portion of what was said to be one of the walls, it was a sort of bank quite crumbled down and overgrown with grass, since that time the foundations of a building of considerable extent have been removed and the ground levelled and cultivated. |

This is a hollow in the east side of Dunlop Hill at present abt. [about] 3 feet deep and extending in a straight line, rather more than half way down the side; whether it was intended for purposes of defence when the Castle was in existence, and extended across the hill towards the west cannot now be seen. and I could not find any person able to give me information on the subject. Mr. George Howie said he had heard "that it was a place where pipes were laid for the conveyance of water up to the Castle". It is thus mentioned in a book called the "Bard of Glazert" written by J.D. Brown, belonging to Dunlop. "On the east side of the hill there are the remains of a deep trench, cut from the top, half way down its side, in a straight line, which strongly reminds one of the remains on similar places of ancient fortifications; but from the nature of the ground, it would appear the trench had probably been made under different circumstances". |
