008 ; 009 ; 012 ; 013 This parish is in the north of the district of Cunningham, in the County of Ayr; with the exception of a small portion which lies in the county of Renfrew, upon which it borders.
It is bounded on the north west, north, and east by the Parish of Neilston in Renfrewshire, on the south-east and south by Stewarton, and on north west by Beith. Its form is oblong. Its extreme length, from north east to south west is about 6 1/2 miles. Average breadth about 2 1/4 miles. The name (Dunlop) as stated in the new Statistical Account of Ayr and Bute, "is supposed to be derived from two Gaelic words, dun, a fortified height, & luib, a winding". The Antiquities of the parish, tho' [though] not numerous, are interesting, and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book -
