A hill of considerable elevation, on which are the remains of an ancient Fort, described in the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of the Parish, as having been formed of 3 concentric walls of stone, the greater part of the materials of which were removed to make fences. In the Acct. [Account] there is mention made of the vestiges of a Fosse being visible at the foot of the hill, but I have seen nothing, that I can take upon myself to say, are vestiges of a Fosse. I have made every enquiry at several persons, but could not obtain any information concerning it. |

CAERwinning Hill - New Stat Acct. [New Statistical Account]
This throughout Scotland, when found as the first syllable
of the names of places, is invariably spelled Car -
see Carberry Tower near Edinburgh, Carbrook, Cardross
Car - when found as the first syllable
of the names of places, seems to
signify, fortified. as Carstairs
Carlisle etc.
Jamieson
On the Summit of Caerwinning hill are the remains
of an ancient fortification. It appears to have formed
of three concentric circles or walls of stone, inclosing a space of 2 acres. The greater part
of the materials of which it was composed have been removed to build fences, &c
The outer wall cannot now be easily traced , but from what remains, it appears to
have been from 10 to 12 feet in thickness. The entrance has been on the western side.
It must have been a place of great strength, and commands a view of the
surrounding Country for many miles. The stones must have been brought from
a considerable distance, being as species tuffaceous trap, while the hill
itself is composed of felspar porphyry. It is believed that the Scottish army
were encamped in this fortification previous to the Battle of Largs.

Mr. Reddet informed me that in the year 1820 when assisting to plough the field they came upon several large flat Sandstones about this place they were supposed to be Stone Coffins in one instance two stones were set on edge some distance apart and a large flat one laid over them, the others were lying near each other singly, but appeared to have been brought there, as the rock underneath is Limestone. Mr. Reddet does not remember of any bones or other remains being found but the soil being very dry and porous may probably account for this. |

In 1749 thee Mains of Kersland being divided
into two farms, the Easter and Wester, were feued
by Lawrence Scot of Bavelor, with consent
of his Curators; the former to Robert Ker, the latter
to James Kirkwood. On the Easter Mains stood
the ancient Mansion house of Kersland, which
was almost entirely pulled down by the feuar,
Part of the lower story, which is arched, and
very strong, is still entire, and forms the dairy
and stables.

Court Hill, from page 220 "In the vicinity of the town is an ancient mound called the
Court Hill. It is of a conical form , and is covered with the finest verdure. These mounds appear
to have been the places for dispensing justice. A Stone, which tradition asserts to have supported the
gallows, formerly stood a little east of the moat. A few years ago an attempt was made to level this interesting
Monument of antiquity, in order to fill up some hollows in the field where it is situated, but the hill proving
to have been formed of rubbish, the design was abandoned, not, however till its appearance was greatly
disfigured." New Statistical Account
" We had no written laws before the reign of Malcolm Canmore, who
was proclaimed King in the year 1057. Before this period our Kings as judges, sat on little
Mounts, and heard and decided controversies, for which reason the place was commonly called
the Mute Hill. Besides the King there were other judges, called brehons, who at certain times or
terms, sat on such little Artificial green hillocks or Mounts, each named tome - moid that is the
Court- hillock, many of which being still remaining in Scotland, especially in the highlands. As
to the appellation of brehon, that is probably owing to their sitting on hills; for as bie or bre, in
the Gaelic signifies a hill. Brehon I take to import the Sitter on a hill"

A town of Considerable extent beautifully Situated on a rising ground on the right bank of the River Garnock, and near the Confluence of the Rye and Caaf with that River.
* History states that is of no higher origin than the beginning of the 17th century, but long existed as a mere hamlet. It has attained considerable prosperity owing to the extensive Iron works etc in its vicinity.
The town consists of 5 streets, three of which meet in the Centre and form a sort of Square; there are many well built houses and Some excellent Shops. The principal manufacture is weaving, there is also a Woollen and Carding Mill and a variety of Artificers work.
Six fairs are entitled to be held Annually the principal of which is held on the last day of July the others are merely nominal.
There is a Station on the Glasgow and S.W. [South Western] Railway at the N.E. North East] end of the town, the principal Inns are the Kings Arms and the White Hart, there is another Inn in Sharon St. formerly called the 'Blair Arms' but the name has come into disuse. |

"Dalry is a Parish of early origin, and the Church which
Stands in the centre of the Village, was dedicated to
the Scottish Queen St. Margaret, on whose festival,
in the month of July, and Annual fair is still
held. This Church was a dependancy of the
Monastery of Kilwinning, the present Church
is plain and modern, and scarcely any vestige
of antiquity remains to be seen about it."

A very Small Knowe Situated in a field near Linn Toll, wherein as John Muir Related to me, he saw 7 Stone Coffins and an Urn - all Containing burnt bones - excavated out of this hill. about 80 years ago. Muir is of the opinion that the person who found these Coffins also found some treasure - as it was noticed that he ever afterwards lived comfortably and altho [although] he was previously a working man, never laboured after this.
The hill appears to be natural but at the time the remains were found - Muir states there was a mound of earth, not large, which has since been levelled by the plough.
These are the only remains which have been found in the neighbourhood for a period of 100 years, as I have been informed by the best authority |

Site of BATTLE between the Royalistsa and Covenanters [Pencote] |
A Battle fought here between the Royalists and the Covenanters |
Captain Blair of Blair |
012 |
Captain Blair who marked the site on Trace, states that in the year 1666, or 1668, a battle was fought here between the Parliamentarian army under Claverhouse, and the Covenanters. For some days previous to the engagement the Covenanters lay concealed in a place called 'Cleeves Cove' and afterwards marched in a Northerly direction, when, near to a place called 'Pencote' they were met by an opposing Army, both armies fought, but the result of the engagement is not known. A few relics have been found here, such as a pistol, and one or two other things of trifling importance, Captain Blair stated that he had in his possession some time ago a written document, referring to this action, though |

the description here given is a summary of his statement the document here referred to may be of importance in as much as it may be more elaborate in its details. This document Captain Blair has promised to produce when it is in his power to do so. From other sources little information can be gleaned, and no allusion is made in any of the Historical Works to it in the description of the Parish. A skirmish may have taken place, for in 1666, an insurrection broke out in this Parish against the Privy Council's measures for the Creation of Episcopany. |

Sheet XII.5 -- Trace 4 -- Ph. [Parish] of Dalry -- Co. [County] Ayr
"On the estate of Blair, in the romantic and beautifully wooded Glen of the Dusk, there is
"a natural Cave in a precipitous, bank of Limestone. It is about 40 feet above the bed
"of the stream, and is covered by about 30 feet of rock and earth. It has two entrances. The west
" or main entrance is situated below a vast overhanging rock, 30 feet long by 27 in breadth, the brow of which
" is covered by the mountain ash, hazel and two large plane trees. Its interior resembles Gothic
" arched work. Part of the roof is supported by two massy columns. Its length is about 183
" feet and breadth from 5 to 12. Near the middle, it expands into a Spacious chamber, 35 feet long by
" 12 broad and 12 high. In former times, popular belief peopled it with elves. It consequently
" acquired the name of Elf house. In later days , during the tyrannical reign of
" Charles II it afforded a hiding place to the Covenanters of this Parish from the
" violence of their infuriated persecutors." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |
