OS1/3/17/1 COYLTON [pariSh] Coylton Coylton Coylton Coylton Statistical Account. Paterson's History of Ayrshire. Johnstons County Map. County Voters List. 033 ; 034 ; 039 ; 040 "In some old words the name of this Parish is written Quiltoun & Cuiltoun & more recently we find it Coiltoune and Coyltoune. Some, on the authority of an old tradition, imagine it took its name from Coilus a king of the ancient Britons, said to have been killed in a battle fought in the vicinity, & interred near the ruins of the old church in the present burying grounds. Little trust can be put in this account. It is more likely the parish received its appelation from some feature characteristic of the district: or, from the River Coyl, which rises in its upper extremity. It forms the boundary of the original parish in nearly all its extent. And Coyl may be of Celtic derivation,- Coill in Gaelic signifying wood, the plural of which is Coiltean; or, it may be as Chalmers conjectures, from the British Coll or Kell, a Grove; or the British Coll the plural Cyll or Kyll, signifying hazlewood, & the Saxon termination ton. If, as is supposed, the district of Kyle was at one period a forest & we may conjecture that the hazel abounded on the banks of this river. and [continued on page 2]
OS1/3/17/1 [Page] 1 Parish of Coylton
OS1/3/17/2 COYLTON [continued from page 1] and its contigous dells & ridges, both stream & parish may have had their designation from this circumstance - and the name would then signify the stream of the hazlewood grove, a place of hazlewoods. *** Coylton was formerly of smaller dimensions than at present. The original parish lies along the south banks of the Coyle. About the end of the seventeenth or beginning of the eighteenth century that portion of it lying on the north & east side of this stream was taken from Ochiltree, & annexed Quoad sacra to Coylton." OS1/3/17/23 [Page] 23 Parish Coylton -- Sheet 34 Plan 5 "The modern mansion of Gadgirth was built by Col. [Colonel] Burnett in the year 1808, upon the same site on which the old castle stood. Wishing to keep it up, he commenced adding to it; but the walls, although upwards of six feet thick, were found to be so rotten that he was obliged to pull the whole down, and substituted the present house. The Castle was that in which John Knox dispensed the sacrament, & Queen Mary spent a night." Patterson's History of Ayrshire. "The older castle, of which some remains now exist, commonly called 'The old Ha', is situated about a quarter of a mile lower down the river, (than Gadgirth House) built upon a Whinstone rock, jutting out upon the river, which surrounded it on two sides; the fosse, over which was a drawbridge, surrounded it on the other two sides, which rendered it a place of great strength in those days" Patterson's History of Ayrshire

[Reverend] Alexander Duncan Mr. John Smith Schoolmaster David Campbell Esq Robert Campbell Teacher 034 A square loose block of trap rock about 5 feet square at its base, & the same in height resting on a flat rock. In Wyllie's Ayrshire Streams it is noted as "a stone of considerable Size & peculiar shape, occupies a prominent portion on the craigs. It is explained in an old legind, still current over the county side, that an ancient Pecht (Pictish) wife one on a time was engaged removing stones to a building in the course of erection at Sundrum. Having procured one of extraordinary dimensions, she was wending her way across the Craigs when her apronstrings Gave way & the rock was deposited on the hill top ** This interesting object would appear in reality to have been one of those rocKing stones at one period so numerous in the west Country; unfortunately it is now removed from the poise"
