A Rapid mountain Stream flowing chiefly in a Southerly direction from a large range of Hills in Kirkcudbright into Wigton Bay it forms a county Boundary nearly the whole of its course Viz between Ayr and Kirkcudbright and between Kirkcudbright and Wigton. It produces excellent fish of different kinds Salmon comes up to near its [Scource] there is a kind of very rare fish called Smelt or Spailing found in it during a few days in March it tastes and smells strongly of rushes this kind of fish is only found in another river of Scotland viz the Forth at Stirling. The Horse Mussel is also found in it to its very [Scource] in which is found occasionally Pearls of good size and quality
