The NewStat. Acct. [Statistical Account] in speaking of Cuff Hill has the following. "But if we view this hill as a
"seat of Druidism, we have a dawning of light. Dr. Jamieson is of opinion that Druidism was not
"extinct in Scotland in the age of Columba, 563-597, and there is reason for believing that it was restored
"by the Saxons, after it had been abolished by the Roman emperors. If so, it must have been the religion of this part
"of the country, a short time previous to the age of St. Inan. Holding this hill as a seat of Druidism, we have
"a corroborative testimony in the etymology of the name. It is called Cuff Hill. Now we learn from Bede,
"that the chief priest of the Druids was called Coifi, Cuifi, or Cuivi. Either of these names can be easily
"corrupted into Cuffi or Cuff, and thus the hill may have received its appellation from being the
"seat of the Druidical worship. Besides, the word Cuffoeth, in the ancient British language, signifies the
"Holy Place, "Cor Kyveoth," which is pronounced Cuffoeth, is the name of Stonehinge in that language. This
"opinion is supported by that of Dr. Macpherson, in his Critical Dissertations, who thinks Coifi was the
"common title of every Druidical superintendant of spiritual affairs. It is now stated as a plausible
"guess at the origin of the name of the hill. There are other places of similar name, and which
"probably had the same origin. Thus, in the acts Dominorum Consilii, under date 6th March
"1491, there is a case, where Gilbert Kennedy of the Coiff is defender, and Fergus Kennedy of
"Cardonald is pursuer; and, in Pitcairn's Trials, Thomas Kennedy of Coiff, is one of a long list
"of that name, dilated of a cruel slaughter in 1528. These places are in different parts of the
"country, and are noticed only as tracing the corruption of Coiffi, which is not so marked
"as the substitution of Tenant for St. Inan." |

A circular space across the Threepwood road, barely traceable, the South Side is Slightly raised and on the north side there is about a foot of an inward slope Similar to (nearly defaced) Roman or British camps- There are no stones such as actually form Druidical circles but the authorities I have quoted except Mr. Dobie say that it is a tradition in the neighbourhood that it is the remains of a Druidical circle-Mr. Dobie is the writer of the [artic]le on Beith in the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] and he referred me to it for his opinion. This is the notice he takes of it in the work referred to.
[At the] bottom of the hill, north of the rocking-stone there are the remains of a circular trench and of some building. The place is called "Kirklie Green" [There] are no remains of a building at the present, and no one in the neighbourhood remembers to have seen any, the object he refers to is not
[and] I think never could have been a Trench. It has the appearance of the remains of a Roman or British Camp (this is but my own opinion I have written the name according to the best authorities I could get.) M. Kinsela C:A [Civilian Assistant] |

"Beith was the occasional residence of St. Inan, a confessor of some celebrity, whose principle abode was at Irvine. He flourished about 839. On the Cuff Hill, in the Parish of Beith, there is a cleft in the rock, which is still called St. Inan's Chair: and at a short distance from it, a well of excellent water, called St. Inan's Well."
There are three springs in the immediate neighbourhood but there is a doubt about which of the three should be called St. Inan's Well two of the springs are in the field with the chair and one in the road a little to the north of it. I have m[ade] inquiry of every one I met in the neighbourhood and not one could undertake to point out the right [one] on this account I have not Supplied the name. The springs are good water but contain no chemical prope[rties] |

The New Stat. Acct: [Statistical Account] (the Article written by Mr. Dobie) states "On a field on the adjoining lands of Townend of Threepwood about 35 years ago. (1839) there was found a large vase of burned clay, of a size capable of containing about six gallons. In it there was a considerable quantity of burned bones. The vase broke on being handled and exposed to the air and soon crumbled into dust. Within it there was found a small open urn of hard burned clay, and at a short distance from it another small urn was found by itself; probably the larger one in which this last was placed was destroyed without being noticed. They indicated no knowledge of art, and seemed as if formed with the finger and thumb" &c. &c. - "We have no floating tradition as to their origin on this hill or its vicinity
Mr. Love (the present proprietor of the land where the objects referred to were found) and John Stevenson were [presen]t when they were dug up, from both these men together I had the place pointed out. they Say that all that is referred to in the [par]t quoted was turned out of one spot, (the one I have marked on the Trace) and Mr. Love thinks that the remains of the urns &c. [were] sent to the Glasgow Museum by Mr. Dobie, late Fiscal of Beith - |

This was a heap of Stones and rubbish, it was partially removed for the purpose of road making. in the removal two stone coffins were discovered, the proprietor then prevented farther removal of the material, the remains of the cairn are about half what they were originally - there are two stone coffins still visible and the whole space around and over the Cairn is thickly planted with Fir and Forest Trees. I have shewn the remains of the Cairn as well as I could judge, and the position of the Tombs accurately as they are |

Paterson's History of Ayr |

The [New] Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] says " On a plain at the South bottom of the hill about 25 years ago were discovered several Stone Coffins under a large Cairn of stones. The total length of the Cairn is 72 feet its breadth 36 feet its height 10 feet. (these measurements are not accurate [signed] M.K ) In one of them were found some fragments of human bones, with a small bead of burned clay and a piece of copper like a defaced coin: but there was no appearance of the Urn. The usual indication of Christian burial was wanting as the coffins did not lie east and west. The cairn which contained these coffins and a considerable part of which is still left entire has been enclosed and surrounded with a plantation by Dr. [Doctor] Robert Patrick of Hazlehead the late proprietor. Mr Love of Threepwood Says in the Centre between the Stones calcined bones were found not far [below] the surface, and not contained in a coffin,- It is the general opinion of others as well as Mr Love that they were the bones of some chief Killed in battle but There is no tradition of a Battle ever having been fought in the neighbourhood |

Court Hill Continued "On the lands of Hill of Beith, there is one of those Moothills on which our Ancestors received
"there reward of their judges. We have good evidence of such places being used as the seat
"of legislation as well as judicature, but when the custom ceased, it is difficult to say, for like many other customs, it
"disappeared gradually, and the change is not noticed by historians. The Moothill of Beith being in a barony belonging
"to the church, is of course the place of judgement from which the Abbot of Kilwinning administered justice to his
"Vassals and tenants. The hill itself is smaller than others in the district. There is a finer specimen at the
"town of Dalry, which is still denominated the Court Hill." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
" We had no written laws before the reign of Malcolm Canmore, who was proclaimed King in the year
"1057. Before this period our Kings as judges, sat on little Mounts, and heard and decided controversies; for
"which reason the place was commonly called the Mute Hill. An eminence of that denomination is still
"at Scone in the neighbourhood of Perth. Besides the King there were other judges, called brehons,
"who at certain times or terms, sat on such little artificial green hillocks, or mounts, each named
"tome-moid that is the Court hillock, many of which, being still remaining in Scotland."

Some are of opinion that the funereal remains (found here in this neighbourhood)
prove that a battle was fought on this spot and that the knoll contains
the remains of the chiefs who fell in conflict. There is a hill at a little
distance southward, called Gillies Hill, and this is supposed to be
the place where the followers of the army appeared.

The walls of an oblong building. the date of its erection is not Known, but it is said to have gradually decayed - Mr. Dobie of Grangevale, Beith says "The only notable incident relative to Hazlehead Castle with which I am acquainted is its having been the birth-place according to Pont, of Alexander Montgomery, a poet of some note in his day. The Loch upon which he states it to have been 'seatted' has long since been drained, and of the 'lairge ditches' environing the 'Castell' there are no traces. Tradition is silent regarding its History." There can be no further information obtained, the Proprietor referred me to Mr. Dobie. |

"There is nothing remaining to identify exactly where this Castle stood, but the spot marked on trace is the supposed site, and has been pointed out, as such, by Mr. Kerr of Broadstone Hall" - (signed) L. Sheddan
C. Asst. [Civilian Assistant]
"The ruins of the Castle of Braidstaine remained till towards the end of the last century, with some vestiges of the garden and an avenue of old trees, but on the Occasion of rebuilding the farm steading, the tenant was allowed to take his own way, when he took down the remains of the Castle, and used the stones in the new building. The avenue of trees and vestiges of garden have all disappeared; so that there is no remnant of its ancient state left."

"In the parish of Beith there were two chapels, before the Reformation;
one of them stood, where the present parish Church now stands;
but it has been almost entirely demolished; the other chapel, which
was dedicated to St. Brigid, stood on the lands of Trearne, which
is now called Treehorn; and had two acres of land belonging to it.
This Chapel, and its lands, belonged to the Monastery of Kilwinning;
and passed into lay hands, by a grant, in 1594: This Chapel has also
been demolished, though some vestiges of it are still extant".

"Giffen was given by Walter de Mulcaster to
Alexander de Nenham as his subvassal. He granted to the monastery
of Dryburgh a half caracute of 50 acres of land in the lordship of
Giffen, at which a Chapel to St. Bridget had previously been founded
by the monastery of Kilwinning, the ruins of which still exist, situated
on a hill which had been used as a burying ground, with an uncommonly
fine spring well, called St. Bridgets Well, at the bottom" See St. Bridgets Well

An extensive Peat Moss through which the Boundary between the Parishes of Beith and Kilwinning runs it belongs to different Proprietors, their boundary through it is undefined but it runs straight from where each property joins the moss to a pole in the centre, the Tenants on each property are allowed to get Peats for their own use free - There is considerable doubt about the Orthography of this name, I applied to numerous persons, none of whom ever saw it written or in Print. It is well known and always pronounced as I have given it- M. K. |
