008 The walls of an oblong building. the date of its erection is not Known, but it is said to have gradually decayed - Mr. Dobie of Grangevale, Beith says "The only notable incident relative to Hazlehead Castle with which I am acquainted is its having been the birth-place according to Pont, of Alexander Montgomery, a poet of some note in his day. The Loch upon which he states it to have been 'seatted' has long since been drained, and of the 'lairge ditches' environing the 'Castell' there are no traces. Tradition is silent regarding its History." There can be no further information obtained, the Proprietor referred me to Mr. Dobie.

"The estate of Hazlehead was a part of the lordship of Giffen, and
"was given to a younger branch of the family of Eglinton. In Pont's
"Cunninghame Typographized, it is said that "Hazlehead Castell is a strong
"old building environed with large ditches, seatted on a loch, veill planted and commodiously
"beautified, the heritage of Robert Montgomery." Laird there of & famous it is for ye
"birth of yret renoned poet Alexander Montogmery " This account was written about 1608,
"recently after the death of the poet, and gives authenticity to the statement as to the place
"of his birth." New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account]
