A parish in the county of Ayr district of Cunningham; with the exception of a small portion which belongs to Renfrewshire, on the border of which it is Situated. It extends about 7 miles in length, from east to west; and its average breadth is about 4 miles. It is bounded on the North in Renfrewshire & north east by Lochwinnoch and Neilston; on the S.E. [South East] by Dunlop; on the S. [South] by Stewarton & Kilwinning, on the W.[West] and S. [South] by Dalry, and on the W. [West] by Kilbirnie. The superficial area is about -- acres. This parish has no detached portion situated within any other parish, nor is there any detached portion of any other parish Situated within it.

"There can be little doubt that the name of this
"parish is derived from the celtic Beithe, signifying
"birch, with which description of wood it is sup-
"-posed, from remains dug up, to have anciently
"abounded. Many of the localities indicate, by
their designations - such as Woodside, Threepwood,
Fullerwoodhead, Roughwood &c.
