In the east end of the village of Ballantrae.
The ruins of an ancient Castle Supposed to have been built about the middle of the 14th. Century by the Lords of Bargany. It stands on rising ground immediately above the public road at the east end of the village of Ballantrae. The walls, which are of Considerable thickness, are nearly level with the surface, except two sides of what appear to have been a Square tower at the SE [South East] end. The remaining portion is about fifty feet high. From its situation in a narrow part commanding two entrances in Carrick, this fortalice must have been of considerable importance in remote times. |

"The ruins of the Castle of Ardstinchar are situated on a rock above the
River Stinchar, a short distance from Ballantrae; and forms a prominent
object to the traveller from the South. The date of its erection is unknown.
It was however, a strong hold of the Kennedies of Bargany, for a
period of 250 years. It consists of several square towers which protected
an embattled wall, enclosing a considerable space; and which appears to have
had also strong defences, particularly on its west or entrance angle."

"This name is derived from the
Gaelic words - Baill a town or village
& traigh - Seashore " the name is a pronounced
in Gaelic - Băll ăn tră ĕ y ' I.E.
The town upon or Near the Seashore .
The Ancient Name of the parish was
Kirkcudbright - Innertig; but in 1617.
an act of parliament was obtained
for removing the parish Church from the
Mouth of the River Tig to the town of Ballantrae,
& hence the Name of the town gradually became
