065 [Situation] - On the west Side of the plan on the Sea Shore in the Southern part of the district of Carrick.
13 miles South of Girvan & 17 North of Stranraer.
A tolerably Sized village,consisting of the Parish Church (established), Free Church, & their respective Manses; Post Office, Schoolhouse. two Inns & three Smaller public houses, & a Number of private dwellings. Chiefly occupied by fishermen & agricultural Labourers. The houses are generally low being mostly but one Storey high , built of lime & Stone & Slated. A good many - especially near the Shore are -thatched. -

Gaelic words - Baill a town or village
& traigh - Seashore " the name is a pronounced
in Gaelic - Băll ăn tră ĕ y ' I.E.
The town upon or Near the Seashore .
The Ancient Name of the parish was
Kirkcudbright - Innertig; but in 1617.
an act of parliament was obtained
for removing the parish Church from the
Mouth of the River Tig to the town of Ballantrae,
& hence the Name of the town gradually became
the Name of the parish -
