033 | [Situation] Supposed to have been Situated between Mill and Kyle Streets and near the Old Quarry A circumstance happened in the neighbourhood of Ayr which tradition has been scrupously faithful in handing down as a Circumstance worthy of note. It is alleged that the English Governor of Ayr had invited the Greater part of the Scottish nobility & Gentry in the western parts to meet him at some large buildings called the Barns of Ayr for the purpose of friendly Conference upon the affairs of the nation - But the English Earl entertained the treacherous purpose of putting the Scottish Gentlemen to death - and as they entered 2 by 2 the English Soldiers with a noose strangled them. + + Indignant at this instance of Cruelty the brave Sir William Wallace instantly set forwards towards the scene of barbarity accompanied by [continued on page 40] |
