This loch lies on a low flat surface about 18 chains N [North] east of Knock Jargon and well known in the locality. It is almost dried up during summer weather. having a marshy appearance, but in the rainy seasons the water accumulates to the extent shown on trace. It is not improbable that there are springs in various parts of it. |

This feature, situated on Knock
Jargon is supposed to be the remains
of an ancient fortification or Camp.
There are two openings on the south
side, Though tradition has
preserved no information con-
cerning the persons who designed
it. Comparing it with others
similarly constructed in various
parts of the country it is
probable that this construction
intended as it may have been
is of Danish origin. |

From its form many Believe this to have been
a Danish strength; but the same reason would
also assign it to the old Britons; and we are the more
inclined to attribute it to them, because of the par-
allelogram which tops an adjacent eminence. see page 41.
Paterson's Hist. [History] of Ayr
"On Knock-georgian are still distinctly
"to be seen the remains of an ancient Camp
"or fortification, particularly the ramparts
"and gateways. From its circular form it is
"generally supposed to be Danish"
New Stat [Statistical] Acct [ Account]
"About 3 miles to the north of Saltcoats is Knockjirgan, or Knockjerigan,
"a hill, in ancient times a Roman Beacon post. A double line of
"fortification is still visible round the summit of the hill, which possesses a most commanding view
"of the entrance to the Frith of Clyde, and of the country in every direction. The line of beacon hills
"were Knockjirgan, Loudon Hill, Caldwell Law, Campsie Fells, and Stirling Castle."

A conspicuous object on the high ground between Knockrivoch and Towerlodge. Supposed to have been a Telegraphic Station in the early years the supposition seems feasible from its position with the inland portion the surrounding Country.

"The harbour of Ardrossan is formed on a most magnificent design and were it completed
" & according to the original plan, would scarcely be inferior to any in the Kingdom. Though
"unfinished, is capable of accommodating at present a great number of vessels of almost
"any size; there being from 12 to 20 feet of depth at high water. It is secure against almost
"all winds, the roll of the sea in a storm is very inconsiderable and in rough weather
" it is frequently crowded with vessels which flee thither for safety.

OLD WINDMILL (Ruin) [Saltcoats] |
Old Windmill
Ruin |
Doctor Wallace
Doctor Brown
Mr. A Campbell
Doctor Kinnear
Robert Cunningham Esqr. |
016 |
There appears to be some obscurity relating to the Origin of this Ruin it is currently believed by the living Authorities to have been a Windmill at the same time the Original name of Windmill Street (Castlewearock) throws a doubt on the matter, as the name would imply that a castle was in some way connected with this name, the only clue which has been gained to elucidate the matter is a statement in the
Saltcoats Herald for october 1853 thus⁜ |
|
|
OS1/3/1/101 |
|
|
|
|
|
[Page] 101
Parish of Ardrossan -- County of Ayr
⁜ "It is said that there was at one time a castle built upon the
"rock on Castlewearock but time has long since demolished it and a house
"having a stone with a loophole ([inserted] House immediately South of Windmill) in it built into the gable stands on its site.
"the probability is that it was a Tower erected in more dangerous times to protect
"the coast.-
As the above is merely conjecture it may be perhaps prudent not
to insert the name on the authority of the Herald, that written on trace is the popular name |
