016 This town is situated on the Frith of Clyde in the parishes of of Ardrossan and Stevenston the largest portion being in Ardrossan the town is comprised of various streets and lanes Generally Speaking in bad repair, there is a Market on Thursday for the Sale of Cattle and Corn and a Yearly fair on the last Thursday of May.- Owing to the vicinity of Ardrossan the Shipping trade of this port is at present totally done up
The local affairs of the Town are transacted by a Committee of Respectable Rate payers

Exr. [Examiners?] office 07 Aug 1856{ [Saltcoats] Is a Burgh of Barony - and the boundary not to appear on the plan - - reply to remark 20 page 3. examination of plans -

The following is extracted from Paterson's Hist [History] of Ayr.-
"We (James (5th) J.B.G. by the grace of God King of the Scots) 1528 also J.B.G. [initials] grant that in the said Burgh (Saltcoats) there may
"be burgesses, and that the same may have power in all time coming
"to elect Bailies annually, and all other officers necessary for the government
"of the said burgh, with power to the burgesses and
"inhabitants of the foresaid burgh of holding in the same for ever
"a Market Place and a weekly Market on the Wednesday, and
"free fairs annually on the feasts of the conception of the blessed
"Virgin Mother, and of St. Laurence, for 8 days of the same, with
"all tholing ( allowances) or liberties to or at the free Markets
"Observed or to be Observed in any Manner prevalent for
"ever" &c The above is an extract from a charter.
"The original Charter we believe, is lost, but the following (viz[that is to say]
