OS1/2/79/1 OBAN Oban Oban Oban New St: Acct: [Statistical Account] Fularton's Gazetteer Burgh Plan 098 The town of Oban is pleasantly situated on the north-west shore of the united Ph. [Parish] of "Kilmore & Kilbride". Its neat & picturesque appearance cannot fail to please the traveller or tourist whether he approaches it by sea or land. The view from the bay, of the town and surrounding country is peculiarly striking. The most recent and perhaps the finest part of this Town is "Columba Terrace", in the centre is the Great W. [Western] Hotel". The leading street thro' [through] the town is "George St:" which runs nearly north and South; it is in the progressive scale of advancement and of general improvement and will no doubt in a few years be at least doubled in size, and in the number of its inhabitants. There are five places for "Public Worship" of different denominations; four Schools, besides private seminaries; Six principal Hotels; A County Building, or Court House; Three Branch Banks; A Masonic Hall, and Public Library. Steamers arrive daily "en route" to Glasgow and the "Highlands" during the summer Season, also Coaches to Ardrishig and Inverary. Is a parliamentary burgh, and, along with Ayr, Irvine, Campbelton, and Innverary, returns a Member to Parliament. The parliamentary Boundary as fixed by the Reform Act, includes the space on the Main Land determined by ½ mile radius from the "Fountain" in Argyll Square. The Circle thus formed is marked by B. [Boundary] stones at different points. [continued on page 2]

OS1/2/79/2 OBAN (Continued) [continued from page 1] "Oban, a parliamentary burgh, and thriving little town and sea-port, is situated in the "quoad civilia" parish of Kilmore, 25 miles South-east of Tobermory, 33 west-north-west of Inverary, 35 South-south-west of Fort William, 24 north of the west-end of the Crinan Canal, 92 north-west by north of Glasgow, and 136 west-north-west of Edinburgh. The site of the town is singularly happy, as to at once scenic interest, burghal comfort, and commercial influence. Its command of the Western islands, both in their finest groupings with landscape, and in nearly all their facilities for communicating with their principal marts and sources of supply. has occasioned the town to be called the "Charing Cross" of the Hebrides; its position midway between the Caledonian and Crinan Canals, its consequent power of powering the productions of the north and the south over most of the Hebrides, and of the interior of Argyllshire and its immediate and complete influence over all the chief marine highways of the west, and the most practicable paths of ingress to the interior, have rendered it the virtual capital of the Western Highlands". "A weekly market is allowed by Charter to be held on Friday; and four annual fairs, held respectevely in March, May, October and November". Fularton's Gazetteer
