"The parish of Campbelton is the seat of the presbytery of Kintyre, which is sometimes, but improperly, spelt Cantyre. The name of the parish is not older than the beginning of the present century, when the town, which makes a part of it, was created a burgh & called Campbelton, from the family name of the Duke of Argyll, the
principal proprietor of the town and neighbourhood. For some time before that period, it went by the name of Ceann-loch (Lochhead), which it still retains in the language of the country, and sometimes by the name of Kilkerran, one of the four ancient parishes united in the last century into one. But the oldest name of Campbelton by which a part of it is still known, is Dalruadhain, from its having been the capital of the ancient Scottish or Dalreudinian Kingdom. The parish consists of a large section of
the peninsula of Kintyre. It is bounded on the north by the parishes of Killean & Kilchenzie; and Saddell & Skipness NB From the preponderance of authorities quoted, and universal common usage, "Campbelton" should be the form adopted - which is the natural anglicised combination of the two words "Campbell" & "town" - were this not
adopted, the form in my opinion should strictly be "Campbelltown" - There are numerous instances in Scotland as Ington, Newton etc sometimes written Ingtown, Newtown

on the west by North Channel; on the South by the parish of Southend;
and on the East by the Firth of Clyde
Both ends of the parish to north and south are hilly. The coast may be
reckoned at 20 miles in Extent. The shore, towards the north, is chiefly rocky; on
the west, almost entirely sandy; and south-east it presents a bold and rocky appearance.
The beach, on the Bay of Campbeltown, is sand intermixed in many
places with pebbles, chiefly formed by quartz." Statistical Account."

I must refer you

The Fort in its original state would appear to have been a built wall without mortar as a small portion of a wall distinctly traceable is yet to be seen about 2 or 3 feet in height. There is no tradition concerning it farther than what is ascribed to all others in the locality, that being the remains of a castle. |

STONE CIST FOUND |
|
|
252.09 |
On this farm about ½ mile westward is what appears to be the remains of an ancient cairn, out of which Mr. Macintosh says a number of Stone Cists were found (See Trace 2 ), also on Trace 6 a few years ago Mr. Macintyre the Farmer found a Stone cist whilst cultivating a portion of ground close upon the top of a bank near Glenlussa River. "On the farm of Kildeddan 70 or 80 years ago, a great many stone coffins were found with Urns in them, and in many other places throughout the country similar coffins have been discovered." McIntosh's History
*. I observed that this has a circular wall just above ground - and circular hole in one of the stones 10" x 6" x 8" deep. Also small circular enclosure close by 4' x 4', perhaps a turret - (different hand and colour of ink) It cannot be a cairn therefore, but is similar to the "Duns" in hill-forts. R.W. |

History of Kintyre
The church of Kilmichael stood about 2 miles north-west of Campbelton. In the year 1794 it had been nearly destroyed by the removal of the material for building houses, and no vestiges now remains.

On the summit of a small knoll on the farm of Ballivulline there are the remains of a circular building, which is considered by the authorities quoted to have been an ancient British fort. I was informed by James Templeton that a number of human bones were found, of a large size, by workmen while trenching the knoll to procure stones for building purposes.
"Some years ago on the farm of Ballivulline, two miles north of Campbeltown, a place called the Forth was trenched, and a great many human bones of a large size dug up, which proved evidently that the people in those days were greatly superior in stature to those at present."

Old Stat: [Statistical] Account |
|
A short distance westward [from High Kilkivan] is the ruins of a chapel, within a grave yard which is still in use, The ruins of the Chapel still stand about 6 or 7 feet high and are of an Oblong Shape. it is said to be the remains of the last of the old churches in KIntyre, in which public worship was performed before the Reformation
"Cil-chaomhan, the church or Cil of the beoved is 4 miles west of Cambeltown, in the midst of a very fertile district. The broken walls of the church are still standing in the centre of the burial ground, It is said to the remains of the last old churches in Kintyre, in which public worship was performed before the Reformation. Some records of this church are still extant in Inverary. It's discipline, according to tradition, was very curious. The Priest or Minister being much annoyed with delinquencies, proposed, and put into practice, that a yearly meeting should take place in the church, when all who were not satisfied with wives or husbands should assemble, the Church being darkened, and try their fortunes in grasping some one or other. When the church was lighted again whether the one they held was hunchbacked or crooklegged, they were obliged to put up with them till the next yearly meeting. McIntosh's History of Kintyre
"The early history of the church of Kilkivan is unknown. Its name seems to indicate its dedication to St. Coomgan or Keivan It stood on the side of a lofty range of hills about 1 mile from from Machnihanish Bay, part of the building which in 1794 was in good preservation, still remains. A considerable town being a royal burgh lying at the head of a Loch or bay of the same name. The town comprises a number of Streets & Lanes. Also a Prison, A Town Hall; a number of excellent schools; 2 Parish Churches 2 Frees, 1 U.P. [United Presbyterian] 1 Episcopal and 1 Roman Catholic chapel. The principal trade is the distilling of Malt Whisky for which the Barley is chiefly imported from France and the East coast of Scotland.
A considerable parish is attached to the town, "Consisting of the Ancient parishes of Kilkerran; Kilmichael; Kilkevan; and Kilchousland: Soon after the Reformation they were united & called the parish of Lochhead, that being the name of a burgh of barony in the parish of Kilkerran. The oldest record extant of the Presbytery of Kintyre commences on the 16th August 1655, & from that date to the 6 March 1660 The United parish is there called the parish of Lochhead. There is no entry in this record for 27 years thereafter but from the justiciary books of Argyleshire & the Isles, it appears that a circuit Court of Justiciary was held at Campbelton in August 1680, this is the earliest period the modern name has been found in any writing; & the first time thereafter that the presbytery of Kintyre met, it was at Campbelton on the 9th November 1687. & the change in the name of the burgh parish from Lochhead to Campbelton is said to have been an act on the part of the people of those days to mark their respect & affection for the noble family of Argyle. A Royal Charter was granted by Kikng Wiliam III. dated 19 April 1700 raising the old burgh of barony of Lochhead to the dignity and privileges of a Royal Burgh".
"The parish is bounded on the north by the parishes of Killean & Saddell; on the East by the Sound of Kilrannan & on the west by the Atlantic Ocean" New Stat. [Statistica] Acct. [Account] |

Mr. Eward M. H. Eachran, once Rector of Kyrigan, and Mr. Andrew, his son, Rector of Kilcoman, who erected this stone". Macintoshes History of Kintyre. Gordon in his "Itmerarium Septentrionlae" mentions that it is a Danish Obelisk; but Mr. Pennant who visited this stone in 1770 & who was the first to decipher the Inscription, gives it as his opinion that it camefrom Iona. It is certainly a great monument to the town and is as old as the 12 Century" New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |

In a field to the south west of this farm house [Killeonan] on Trace 4 is evidently to be seen the Gable of an old building about 1 1/2 feet high which the Authorities here quoted say is the only remains left of an old chapel said to be dedicated to a St. Eonan. Any further information cannot be gleaned. Farther than a small patch of ground here is left unploughed in veneration of the chapel. "of the 4 Parishes Churches, the ruins of 2 only only exist. There are several small chapels, of which a part of the walls are still standing, besides some others, probably of more ancient date, which having mouldered away into heaps of rubbish over grown with moss may still be traced, which tradition points out their locality, & has carefully preserved their name". Kilchousland Continued
of Kilbrandon, she was buried in
this place. I have seen the place said
to be her grave. It is a coffin, or chest,
made up of stone flags. like many others of the
same kind in Kintyre. It is not known at what
date religious worship was given up in this church,
but its walls look more fresh than any other of the
old sacred edifices. I saw in it a large stone,
with an open space in the centre, through which
parties caught hands who had eloped against the
consent of parents or friends; and having succeeeded in
reaching the church, though they were closely pursued,
if they performed the act of catching hands, it was
held unlawful to separate them; but permit them to
be married when their friends became reconciled".
History of Kintyre
"The Church of Kilchousland whose walls are
still entire, stands on a rocky eminence over-
hanging the sea not far from the mouth of
Loch Kilkerran".

A well known name applied to a ruin of an irregular shape. The north, south & east walls remain but not their original height, now being from eight to twelve feet high. It appears to have been a place of stome strength the walls being about 4 feet thick. At the south end there is an almost entire shaped oblong ruin, the north & west walls of which are of the ordinary dwelling house thickness the south forming apparently portion of the original structure, & as stated above (4 feet in breadth). A few Chains north of the same, are the remains of a cairn in which was discovered several stone cists containing human remains. The propriertor in cultivating the ground preserved the site in which a stone cist is still exposed to view.
"During the civil wars this country having suffered so much from the ravages of Alexander McDonald called Alister McColl, who came over with a party of Irish, to assist Montross, the Earl of Antrim was expected at the same time, and a battery commonly called the Trench was raised for his reception on a point, at the entrance to the harbour".
