A small, but ancient graveyard situated on the south bank of Killundine River close to its junction with the Sound of Mull. The proprietor, Col. [Colonel] Cheap, has planted it, so that it is not at present used as a burying place. The ancient parish in which Killundine is situated is termed Killuntaig. It is believed that the Farm of Killundine, on which there is an ancient burying place, was so designated. The burying place or Graveyard is still termed Killuntaig. "Leuntaig" is said to have been a Pictish Lady converted to Christianity, who on being so, founded the religious establishment known as Killuntaig, or possibly, Cillfhuntaig, or the Church or Cell of Leuntag". |

Applies to the remains of an ancient chapel founded by Columba - situated within the Graveyard at the Established Church near Lochaline. "Columba founded the religious establishment of Kill-Challuim-Chille: but the buildings, the ruins of which are still to be seen, consisting of two very striking arches were erected at a much later date. Close to them is a very handsome cross; still standing in perfect preservation, while the remains of other curiously carved crosses are laid upon some of the adjoining graves. The burying-ground surrounds the ruin. The tomb of the renowned Mach-Mhic Ian is still pointed out. On his tomb there is the fitting representation of a mailed warrior with a ponderous broadsword; and his bossy shield remains in the hands of a gentleman residing in Leachd-nam-Saighed." The remains of an ancient castle situated on a promontory on the north side of the Sound of Mull, about a mile and a half south-eastward from the village of Lochaline. It consits of a rectangular wall of great thickness, 30 yards in length, 20 in breadth, and about 20 feet in height, on the outside. The interior is full of debris. The castle was built by the McDonalds, of the Isles, but when, I have been unable to ascertain, for there is no tradition respecting it that I am aware of in the locality. "The principal antiquity is the ruins of a Castle at a farm called Ardtornish (possibly the Innistore of Ossian) On the Sound of Mull". Old St. [Statistical] Account. A large arm of the sea running inland in a northeast direction from the east end of the Sound of Mull as far as Corpach, at the end of the Caledonian Canal. Length about forty miles. Bending to the west at Corpach it is known as Loch Eil. At Corran, where it is contracted to about a quarter of a mile in width, there is a ferry which connects Nether Lochaber, with Kingairloch and Morven. There are several islands in it of which Lismore is the largest. |
