176; 177; 188 Applies to a line of stones from Cnoc na Sgrìoba about a mile north west of Beinn an Oir (One of the "Paps of Jura") to a small fresh water loch called Loch na Sgrìoba close to the sea coast at the north end of the Sound of Islay. The tradition is that one of those old fairy hags, supposed to have existed in olden times, slipped on the top of the mountain and in her fall or descent tore up the ground to such an extent as to leave a great furrow or line of stones down the mountain side; and Loch na Sgrìoba is supposed to have been made by her when she was finally deposited at the foot of the mountain. Sig: [Signification] "Track or furrow of the old woman". [Signed] P. Dougherty 2nd Corpl. R. E. [Lance Corporal Royal Engineers]
