137 A large Strait between the Islands of Jura and Scarba and varying in width from ¾ of a mile to 1½ miles. Towards the west end of this Gulf on the Scarba Side, and a Short distance South of Camas nam Bàirneach is the well known Whirlpool in which tradition say that Breacan a Son of the King of Norway was drowned and hence the name. The whirlpool is supposed to be caused by an immense Cliff facing eastwards upon which the Tide and wind come in contact. The Tide flows through the Gulf when in Flood at the rate of 18 miles an hour and is therefore extremely dangerous for Shipping. but when it is Ebb Tide it is as safe as any other narrow Channel and nothing denotes the proximity of the whirlpool.
