A Hebridean Island in the parish of Colonsay & Oronsay It is separated from Oronsay only by a narrow Sound which is dry at low Water, So that the two islands may be considered as one. They extend lengthwise nearly north and South, Colonsay on the north & Oronsay on the South. They are 12 miles long and from 1 to 3 broad.
The southern extending of Oronsay lies 4 miles north west of the northern extremity of Islay, and 7 miles by north of the South Western extremity of Jura. |

A spring well, situated on the E. [East] side of Kiloran Bay, a short distance S.W. [South West] from the foot of Beinn Bheag. It is lined with masonary & covered by a large stone slab. According to the tradition of the locality this well was opened and used by St. [Saint] Columba, who, it is said imparted healing virtues to it's water. The natives, while visiting it, are in the habit of leaving small articles, such as pins, buttons, small coins etc, in the form of offerings to the Saint. |

These ruins are situated on the E. [East] side of and condiguous to the farm steading of Oronsay and occupy the N.E. [North East] portion of the Grave-yard. They are said to be the ruins of a priory established here by one of the Lords of the Isles, about the 14th century. It is also stated that St. [Saint] Columba made trial of Oronsay for his missionary College, on his first arrival in the Hebrides, and that McSkene, author of "Skene's Celtic Scotland" & professed to have discovered a portion of the wall of this college in the present ruins, I was unable to find any one in Colonsay or Oronsay who could point it out. I called upon Colonel McNeill at Colonsay House; but he was unable to assist me, |

An island in the parish of Colonsay and Oronsay, about 2 miles in length and breadth, forming the southern extremity of the slender oblong formed by those two islands. It is separated from Colonsay by a sound varying in breadth, at the East end, from about 100 yards to about ¾ of a mile at the west end. During fine weather this sound ebbs dry, at spring tides, for about three hours, Saint Columba, on his first arrival in the Hebrides, is said to have made trial of Oronsay for his missionary College, but soon passed on to Iona. |
