They extend lengthwise nearly north and South, Colonsay on the north & Oronsay on the South. They are 12 miles long and from 1 to 3 broad. The southern extending of Oronsay lies 4 miles north west of the northern extremity of Islay, and 7 miles by north of the South Western extremity of Jura.

It is about 4½ feet high. It is supposed that its origin and purposes has been in connection with Cill Cairine, and that it belongs to the same period as that object.

The natives, while visiting it, are in the habit of leaving small articles, such as pins, buttons, small coins etc, in the form of offerings to the Saint.

It is separated from Colonsay by a sound varying in breadth, at the East end, from about 100 yards to about ¾ of a mile at the west end. During fine weather this sound ebbs dry, at spring tides, for about three hours, Saint Columba, on his first arrival in the Hebrides, is said to have made trial of Oronsay for his missionary College, but soon passed on to Iona.
