The castle was taken by his enemies and blown up; but a small portion of it is still standing."

Castle [note]
"At the mouth of Lochridden there is a small island called Eallangheirrig
memorable in the annals of last century. In the year 1685, the unfortunate
Archibald Earl of Argyll having in concert with the Duke of Monmouth attempted
an invasion of the Kingdom, brought with him 3 frigates & a considerable quantity
of arms & ammunition, he landed at Dunstaffnage on the N.W [North West] coast of Argyllshire
& having collected an army of about 3000 men ordered his ships to Eallangheirrig
which he caused fortify in the best manner he could; there he deposited his spare Arms
& ammunition under protection of his ships, and a garrison of 180 men. But soon after
three ships of War & some frigate arrived in the frith of Clyde & proceeded towards
Eallangheirrig to whom the Earl's frigaates & garrison immediately surrendered. In the
Castle were found 5000 stand of Arms, 500 barrels of gunpowder, several cannon, and
other implements of war. The Captains of the frigates after removing these stores, blew
up the Castle, which put an end to any farther hostile operations on the part of
that unfortunate nobleman, who with his party found means to escape; but he was
soon afterwards taken, & met with a fate he little merited from his country."

The parish church of Inverchaolain - A very plain building standing within an enclosed burial ground
"The parish church was built in 1812 and is the third church on the same site. The first was built by a man who said that he dreamt that he would find a treasure concealed in a certain spot in the parish and was commanded to build a church with it on "Crochdan in Airy" but his funds became exhausted, and a part of it remained unslated for many years. There was another church built close to this old one in 1745, which was pulled down when the late proprietor insisted on building the present Church"

A plain modern farmsteading with sheepfold &c attached. Near the South east corner and alongside the garden wall, stand the ruins of a former dwelling of the Lamonds of Knockdow, and at a short distance south there is to be seen a very old holly-tree dividing, from the ground, into several branches and enclosing a space which, it is said, was made available as a bower or Summer-house |
