CAIRNS [Ormaig]: in the Name Book this is not a separate entry but rather part of the Standing Stone entry. I have been unable to locate either feature near Ormaig on Sheet 138. "There is also a very fine ruin of a Church, with an oratory close by it, at Kil-neuair on Lochaweside. This seems to have been an important station, as indicated by the beauty of the workmanship, & the traditions connected with the Church. This Church was held in superstitious veneration long after it ceased to be used as a place of worship. A village was once ranged round it, & it was the station in which a market called A' Marghadh Dhun was held; but now the ruins stand alone by the side of a road which few travellers frequent." "There is a ruin on the northern banks of that lake called Fionn-chairn
Castle which is pointed out as the residence of Mac Mhic Iain. It stands upon a rock, which rises up from the
waters of the lake on one side, & is all around steep & rugged, without a pathway, so that it is entered by climbing
with some difficulty. It is a square building of small dimensions, having an area in the centre,
surrounded by what appears to have been rooms, or rather cells, one tier above another, & the uppermost of them
roofed in by flags of a large size. Tradition says it was destroyed by fire, & the account given of it's
fall is illustrative of the times." New Statistical Account |
