A. McCulloch | 098 | A small castle situated on the top of a precipitous knoll near the south end of Kerrera. It has evidently not been intended as a place of defence, it being very small, but as a watch tower, the view southwards being very extensive. At the period of the civil wars in the beginning of the 17th Century Gylen Castle a stronghold of the McDougalls romantically situated upon a rocky promontory in the Island of Kerrera, was beleagured and taken by a detachment of the main army despatched into Argyllshire in 1647 under General Leslie. Robert Bruce's brooch happened at this period to be deposited in Gylen Castle and became the spoil of Campbell of Inverawe. New Statl. [Statistical] Acccount. The word in the Descriptive Remarks, partially obscured in the fold and shown with [?], looks as though it is "Danish". The castle was built by Duncan McDougall in 1582 but in the 13thC Kerrera was under Norwegian rule and there is mention of an earlier fortification. I was unable to find the reference in" Origines Parochiales".Transcribers who have contributed to this page.
