[Notes to Allt Chonoghlais:]
It is far better in this
case to write the spelling
as given by the authorities
as the meaning of this noun
is not known - See page 43

Allt Dhuaichni-ghlas," "Muddy Burn" or "Grey-Mud Burn".
presumed to be the probable derivation for "Drumley". [Initialled] RH

Note - The Revd. [Reverend] Mr. Mclean with the other
Authorities named above persist that the meaning
of "Chonaglais" is Drumley from the fact that
on occasions of floods the water has a very
muddy & dirty appearance. We can find no
such meaning in McLeod or McAlpine's Dictionary
further than Choin Ghlais is Grey dog, but in
lowland Scotch Drumley means Muddy-thick. And
therefore preserve the name, Concluding the Sign. [Signification] given to be wrong.
As it frequently occurs while the
name is well known few know the meaning.
