085 | An ancient building (in ruins) once the Castle of the Chief of the Macleans, occupying the brink of a high cliff on Duart Point, and consists chiefly of a large square tower with walls of an immense thickness still in good preservation. It is supposed to be of Danish origin, but in this there is only the tradition to rely upon. In 1390, upon the authority of the Great Seal Register, the Castle of Duart was granted "by Donald of Ile, Lord of the Isles, to Lachlan Makgillean". It is now the property of A.C. Guthrie Esq: of Duart House. |
