It is supposed to be of Danish origin, but in this there is only the tradition to rely upon. In 1390, upon the authority of the Great Seal Register, the Castle of Duart was granted "by Donald of Ile, Lord of the Isles, to Lachlan Makgillean". It is now the property of A.C.
