197 | This site which occupies the highest point of Borchill Mòr is also the site of an ornamental tower erected about 150 years ago by Captain Archibald Campbell of Sunderland, but beyond the number of stones now out [on] the site there is nothing to convey the idea that either a fort or tower stood here. Within the recollection of the authorities, however, a considerable portion of the original building could be seen, the whole is now pulled down and all the best stones carried away to the various improvements going on in the district. The name Borchill is said to have originally applied to the fort - Corrupted from the Scandinavian Borg, a castle or stronghold, & fiel or fell, a hill - & means stronghold of the hill. No information as to its origin is obtainable. |
