OS1/2/37/12 ST MARY'S CATHEDRAL (In Ruins) St. Mary's Cathedral (In Ruins) St. Mary's Cathedral (In Ruins) John Macdonald (Guide to the ruins) Archibald Macdonald Ex-guide Iona Dugald McCormick Shian Iona 104 The extensive ruins of a Cathedral church in the island of Iona about a mile and a half from its north-eastern end. During 1875 the ruins have been renovated, and the earth and rubbish cleared away from the foundation bringing to light a considerable amount of ruin which had been previously hidden. "The chief ruin of the island is that of the Abbey Church or cathedral. Originally it seems to have sustained only the former character, but afterwards it became Cathedral as well as Abbey Church; the bishops of the Isles occassionally adopting Iona as the seat of their residence. The building is manifestly of two distinct periods, both difficult or impossible of fixation. The part eastward of the tower is probably of the same date as the Chapel of the nunnery, and the other part belongs probably to the 14th century. Other ruins and relics are either very much dilapidated or of no considerable importance". Extract from Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland.
