104 | Extensive ruins at the south end of the village of Baile Mòr. "The Chapel of the Nunnery, usually the first of the ruins shown to visitors, seems next in antiquity to the Chapel of St. Oran. The nuns to whom it belonged were Canonesses of St. Augustine, and were not displaced at the reformation. Though a court is shewn and also some vestige of what is pronounced to have been a Church, the other buildings belonging to the Nunnery have so far disappeared that they cannot be intelligibly traced". In 1875 the process of clearing away the earth and rubbish from amongst these ruins has been regularly carried on so that a considerable portion more of the ground plan of the building can be definitely traced than formerly, and several metal articles such as buttons, keys, and scissors have been found. These are all carefully preserved. The ruins have been originally surrounded by a graveyard, and the bones which were dug up when excavating have been carefully collected and re-buried. |
