Rev [Reverend] I McFarlane, Kildalton Rev [Reverend] I McGilchrist Bowmore Mr Peter Chisholm, Inspector of Poor, Bowmore Various A united parish in the Island of Islay. It is in the presbytery of Islay and Synod of Argyll. It Comprises the south eastern part of the Island of Islay, together with the adjacent Isles, the Chief of which are Texa, Cavrach, Inersay, the Ardelister islands, and those of the point of Ardmure. Its length north-eastward is 14 miles and its breath is about 6 miles. It contains the villages of Port Ellen, and its post town is Bowmore. There are remains of four old places of worship, and three ancient forts. Two of the forts appear to have been Danish and the third was built by the Macdonalds, and was there last stronghold in Islay. There is a handsom light monumental tower, 80 feet high errected by Mr Campbell to the memory of his lady. The parish church was built about 1824 and contains 450 sittings. There is a government church at Oa; which was constituted quavad sacru parochial, by the Court of Fiends in 1849. ["Fullertons Gazetteer"]
