This parish lies at the extemity of the peninsula of Kintyre, and consists of what were formerly the parishes of Kilcolmkill and Kilblaan. These two parishes are now united under the modern name of Southend or South Kintyre, which the parish has borne since the Reformation. The extreme length is 11 miles and greatest breadth 5; It is bounded on the East and South by the Firth of Clyde, and the North Channel; on the west by the Atlantic; and on the north, by the parish of Campbelton. Its figure is polygonal. There are no considerable ranges of mountains in this parish, The highest hill Cnoc Moy is the most remarkable for its height in the district of Kintyre; it is a conspicuous object to all vessels coming from the Westward

The coast forms a circuitous course of 19 miles. The shore is chiefly sandy towards the east coast, but to the west is high and bold, and very rocky & has a fine appearance from the sea. The principal headland is the Mull of Kintyre called by the Romans Epidium Promontorium, where nature rears a strong barrier to resist the waves of the Atlantic. It is the nearest point of the whole island of Great Britain to Ireland, the distance being computed to be only 11 1/2 miles between the promontory & Tor Pt. [Point] Coy. [County] Antrim.
There is no portion of this parish detached (Except Sanda and its adjoining Islands) nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this Parish. |

265-3 -- Parish of Southend -- Argyllshire
[Notes]
St Blane ?
"Of this church, dedicated to Blane, a saint of considerable note in the
5th. Century, we have no early notice. In the year 1527 Sir Morice Makneile
Rector of Kirkblane died, and was succeeded by Master James Haswell, the
patronage being at that time apparently vested in the Crown. In 1538 the
Rectory of Kilblane was resigned by Sir Robert Montgomery & Sir James McGauchane
was presented to the charge by King James V. The Church stood on
the right bank of the Coniglen by which it has been washed away together
with the greater part of the burying-ground. The Church of Southend
built in 1774 stands near the spot. Origines Parochiales
'Of St. Blaan's Chapel there is no vestige. It was probably carried
away by the river which passes near it. Most of the burial-ground, which
belonged to it, has been demolished in the same manner within a
century back." Old Stat [Staistical] Account.
"No vestige remains of the parish church of St Blane. Here also
neglect is conspicuous. The Chapel was carried away by the water of
Coniglen, which passes close by it, as was also the whole of an extensive
cemetery attached to it, with a very small exception, which now forms
the bank of the river, and human bones may now be seen bleaching in the Sun".
New Stat [Statistical] Account.

Near the above [Creagach Leac], and about half a mile E.N.E. [East North East] of the farmhouse of Blasthill, an irregular shaped enclosure marked out by Standing Stones, some of them 3 or 4 feet high. The entrance which is regularly indicated also by upright stones is at the E. [East] end. Near the centre of the circle is an open Cist of the usual size. I could find no markings on any of the stones. An old resident pointed out the place, but others who have long been in the neighbourhood knew nothing about it, which is surprising as the object is a conspicuous one. Dr. [Doctor] Trotter who first drew my attention to it says the place is held in peculiar veneration by the Macdonalds, who were the clan originally located in Southend. |

Parish of Southend -- Argyll.
"After subduing Huntly, Lt. Genl. [Lieutenant General] Leslie marched south
and being joined by the Earl of Argyle at Inverary, they invaded Kintyre, &
after a skirmish which took place at Rownaherine, in the parish of Killean on
25th May 1647, they retreated to Dunaverty. Sir Alexander McDonald placed his
Kinsman, Archibald McDonald of Sanda assisted by Archibald Og, or young, his son
with 300 men in the fortress, with a few of the Clan McDonald who had joined
them, and went himself with his father and the remainder of his forces to Islay.
Genl. [General] Lelsie having been joined by the Marquis of Argyle & a vast number of his
clan who collected to his standard, as he went along, proceeded to Dunaverty
and regularly invested the Castle, which was for a considerable time most
gallantly defended against an Army ten times the number of the garrison.
During the month of June several desperate assaults were made upon it,
but the assailants were always repulsed with considerable loss. About the
10th. of July the besiegers discovered that the garrison was supplied with
water by means of pipes communicating with a spring without & a well within.
These were cut off & when a party from the fortress made an attempt to
supply themselves from a stream near the base of the rock, they were all slain.
The want of water, in the dry sultry month of July, drove the besieged to despair;
and as it was impossible to hold out any longer, a flag of truce was sent to Genl. [General]
Leslie & the Marquis of Argyle, offering to surrender on such terms as might be
agreed on, & after several stipulations proposed by Archibald Og MacDonald of Sanda
had been rejected, the garrison surrendered to the mercy of the Kingdom. Genl. [General] Leslie
afterwards made a distinction, that the besieged had yielded themselves to the Kingdom's
mercy and not to his, & availing himself of this infamous casuistry he caused as disgraceful,
bloody, and indiscriminate a massacre to take place as the pen of history has ever recorded".
New Stat. [Statistical] Account.
"There (Castle of Dunaverty) also, Alexander McDonald, known by
the name of Alister, son of Coll Kittach who had raised a party of
Irish & Highlanders, calling themselves Royalists, to assist Montrose
in the civil wars, had his last palladium - 300 of his men were pursued
by General Leslie, & besieged there in the year 1647. Being reduced to great
distress by the want of water, they were persuaded to surrender at discretion
after which they were barbarously massacred".

Castle [note]
"The old castle of Dunaverty deserves to be mentioned
as the scene of some historical events. There is on one side
a tremendous precipice hanging over the sea; on the other
the hill on which it is situated rises in the form of a pyramid.
Nature was assisted by art in making this a stronghold. The
sea nearly surrounds it; and the fossee, covered with a
draw-bridge, after which two or three walls, one within
the other, fortified the ascent. On the top of this rock the
Lord of the Isles had one of his Castles, in which Robert
Bruce took refuge for some nights during his adversity".

It is the nearest point of the whole island of Great Britain to Ireland, the Distance being computed to be onlu 11 1/2 Miles between the promontory & Tor Pt [Point] Coy [County] Antrim.
There is no portion of this Parish detached (Except Sanda and its adjoining Islands) nor is there any portion of any other parish contained within the boundary of this Parish. |
