In the year 1753, the old parishes of Saddell & Skipness with a large tract of country between them, were disjoined from the parishes of Killean & Kilcalmonell and erected into an united parish. Its retains its ancient names Saddell seems to be dreived from its principal object the monastery, signifying the plain of the priests, by an easy contraction of the word Sagairt ie priest, and dail a plain. The other name Skipness is evidently from the Norse language and signifies Ship-point alluding probably to its being a station of the Danish fleet. when this part of the Kingdom was under their dominion.
This parish is situated on the east coast
of Kintyre, it is bounded on the East by the
Sound of Kilbrannan which separates it from
Arran, on the west by the parishes of
Kilcolmonell & Kilberry and Killean & Kilchenzie
and on the south by the parish of Campbelton. |

[Note to An Dùnan:]
There is a doubtful legend that this mound owed its
origin to a penal enactment of one of the ancient Earls of Argyle, ordering
criminals of a certain class (probably belonging to Skipness) to convey barrows of earth on foot all the way to
this spot from Inverary, & Mr. Fraser told me the mound had a gaelic name signifying "Knoll of the Curse"
in consequence - [Initialed] T.P.W

There are two projecting Towers, one at the southeast end and the other called Tur an t-Sagairt (The Priests Tower) at the north east end which was evidently the keep of the Castle. The western side is flanked by a small tower about the centre. The wall at the entrance projects slightly at the south side, so as to form by means of loopholes at its junction with that side a slight flanking defence to the east and west. There has also been a portcullis to protect the gate".

[Note to Skipness Castle:]
"Near the point of Skipness, stands the Castle
of the same name. Its appearance is very noble. It can
scarcely, even at this day, be called a ruin, though
it must be a structure of great antiquity, being probably
built by the Danes. It is built with cement apparently
made up of a composition of lime sea-shell, and earth
of a dunnish colour, so exceedingly firm, that it were
easier to quarry a whin rock. Some parts of the walls
seem to be of a later date than others, being thinner and in
a different style of architecture". Old Stat [Statistical] Account. |

This name is applied to a finely enclosed Burial ground at Skipness Point, within the enclosure stands the remains of a building said, by the Authorities, to have been a Chapel the walls stand entire and still their original height, no information as to its date of erection can be obtained in the locality, but it seems to be of considerable antiquity.
It is from this place that Kilbrannan Sound derives its name, being situated near northern entrance of the same. |

No information but the name can be obtained in the district with reference to this antiquity. The size (3 chs [chains] x 1) would lead one to suppose it to have been a place of considerable importance and must have been inaccessable at the shore Side the wall having been built on the edge of a steep precipice. The only remains now to be seen is a small portion of wall at the South end & N.E [North East] angle. |

"Upon several of the headlands near the sea-coast
there are ruins of small forts, which probably served
as Watch Towers or stations for telegraphic signals
There is one at Carradale which must have been
of some importance. It is built on a high rock
fronting the sea, whence it is inaccessible and was
defended on the land side by a broad & deep ditch.
It is 240 ft [feet] long by 72 broad. Nothing now remains
but a portion of the outer wall."
New Stat: [Statistical] Account
Remarks by Examg. Offr. [Examining Officer]
The remains here are obviously not those of
one of the ancient 'duns' or hillforts. The portions
of wall which still are standing have all the appearance
of having belonged to a more modern feudal castle.
The small indent 4' deep at the S.E.
angle, the regularity of the lines of wall,
& the squareness of outline of the place,
also the character of the masonry are
conclusive evidence.

"About a mile south-west of Aird on a small peninsula
stand the ruins of a "Vitrified Fort" of an ovoidal form,
and still in a state of tolerable presentation. The peninsula
itself is indented with abrupt rocks on all sides, and
the wall of the fort is adopted to the elliptical form of
the eminence. Its circumference is about 150 yards and its
greater and less diameter 60 & 25 yards respectively"
New Stat [Statistical] Account.
"At the extremity of the point of land which forms the
fine bay of Carradale, there is a small island, in
the centre of which is to be seen, the foundations of a
vitrified wall of an elliptical form, surrounding
about a rood of ground. There is no tradition to
throw any light on the puzzling monument of antiquity.
Its insular sequestered situation & particularly its form
which was peculiar to the Ancient Druids, and a large
opening on the East, towards the rising sun, would
tempt one to conjecture that it was built by that
venerable order, as a place of retreat & security, when
they fell into disgrace, and had drawn upon themselves
the displeasure of the race of Fingal by assuming
a greater degree of power, than these haughty heroes
were willing to allow them" Old Stat [Statistical] Account.

Upon the shore below the farmhouse of Whitestone, on a wooded knoll, are the remains of an oblong or oval shaped wall of great thickness, one portion of which upon the north slope measures 12 ft. The length of the Fort is 158 x 63 links from out to out of the walls, the eastern side being naturally scarped by rocks, & the remainder of the circuit by very steep slope. A sort of gully forms an additional defence on the north side & a similar one to the south.

"The abbey of Saddell, a monastery of the Cistercian Order,
was begun by Somerled, Lord of Kintyre and the isles (who died in 1163)
and finished by his son Reginald. It was built in the form of a Cross
The length from E [East] to W. [West] is about 136 feet by 24 over walls, and the transept
from N [North] to S [South] about 78 feet by 24. The S. [South] End of the transept was extended
58 feet more, and made the side of a square, which served for Cloisters. There
is very little of the Church or Cloisters now standing" Old Stat. [Statistical] Account.
"Before the middle of the 13th Century the abbey of Sagadull, afterwards
termed Sandale and Saddell, was founded for Monks of the Cistercian order
by Reginald the son of Sorlet (Somerled), who styled himself King of the
Isles and Lord of Ergile and Kyntire. He granted to the monks the lands of
Glensagadull & the 12 Marks of Baltebeam in the lordship of Kyntire & the
20 Merklands of Ceskew in the isle of Arane. The Abbey it is said became a
house of no common repute for sanctity. It is said also, that about the year 1257
Thomas Sandalius (apparently so named from his connection with the Abbey)
became a monk of Saddell, that he was afterwards abbot, that he was famed for
his austerity, that he left many works which were preserved in the library of
St. Andrews. It has been suggested that Saddell is to be identified with the
'Cloister of grey monks' who made their peace with Haes King of Norway
in his descent upon Scotland in 1263 and gave Symon, apparently one of his
chaplains, who died at Guday (the isle of Gigha) sepulture within their Church
in Kintyre. The remains of the Monastery stand on the banks of a small
stream at the entrance to the valley of Glensaddell on the east coast of
Kintyre. The abbey church which was in the shape of a cross, was 136 feet
long

long by 24 wide, having a transept 78 feet by 24, and a nave 60 feet long,
and south and west of the transept there is a square 58 feet wide, apparently
the cloisters. The burying-ground contains a few monuments of the
Macdonalds and other clans".

"The Castle of Saddell is a square tower of con-
siderable dimensions, which is said at one time to have been
entirely surrounded by water. This, joined to the circumstance
of its being flanked with a strong range of battlements all
round the top, must have rendered it an impregnable fortress.
From these battlements one of the Macdonalds, who had a
gun which he facetiously called the cuckoo, let her voice
be heard to the destruction of any suspicious person
who unwarily approached his dwelling"
