FORT [Whitestone] | Fort | 247 | Upon the shore below the farmhouse of Whitestone, on a wooded knoll, are the remains of an oblong or oval shaped wall of great thickness, one portion of which upon the north slope measures 12 ft. [feet] high. The wall is strongly faced & jointed but without mortar, after the manner of Hill-Forts. The length of the Fort is 158 x 63 links from out to out of the walls, the eastern side being naturally scarped by rocks, & the remainder of the circuit by very steep slope. A sort of gully forms an additional defence on the north side & a similar one to the south. [Initialled] T.P.W |
