The united parishes of Lismore and Appin was formerly called the parish of Kilmaluag, from Saint Malocus, the tutelar Saint of the parish. * * Lismore signifies a great garden, being a compound of the two Gaelic terms Lios, a garden, and Mor, great. The term Appin is of doubtful signification. Some take it to be a contraction of Appennine, from the mountainous appearance of the Country: but the true signification seems to be Abbot's Land, from Abba, Abbott and fonn, land, written Abb-fhon. * *
The island of Lismore is 10 miles long and averages about 1 1/2 miles in breadth; and Kingerloch, a district of the parish of Lismore and Separated from Lismore and Appin by Linne-sheilich (or Linnhe Loch) is about 16 miles long and 4 miles broad. * * * The parish is bounded on the east by the parish of Ardchattan, which is separated from it by Loch Creran; on the North-east by the parish of Fortingal in Perthshire, which it meets at Cruach; on the North by Loch Leven which Separates it from the Parish of Kilmaly in Inverness-shire; On the West by the parishes of Morvern and Ardnamurchan; on the South west by the Sound of Mull and the Atlantic, and on the South by the Parish of Kilmore, separated by the Lynn of Lorn, an Arm of the sea about 3 leagues over.

"Ballachulish, or Ballahullish, or
Balchullish, a quoad sacra parish,
divided from the parish of Kilmalie by
authority of the General Assembly in May
1833. It consists of two distinct districts,
separated from each other by the Linnhe
Loch, with a church in each district, in
which worship is performed alternately once
a fortnight. The district connected with the
church at North Ballachulish, which lies in
Inverness-shire, is 17 miles in length by 7 in
breadth; that connected with the church at
Ardgour, in Argyllshire, is 14 miles by 6.
The two churches are about 4 miles apart,
and were built in 1829, at an expense of
£1,470 each, under the provisions of the Act
5 George IV C. 90. The church at Ballachulish
has 300 sittings; that of Ardgour 210. Stipend
£120, with a manse and glebe. Population
of the Ardgour district in December 1835, 549;
of the Ballachulish district 706. Total 1255,
of whom 935 belonged to the Established Church.
This parish is in the presbytery of Abertarff and
synod of Glenelg. Patron, the Crown.
There is a large and valuable slate-quarry
here, on the great clay-slate formation which
extends from Easdale on the south to this point

"The prospect from the inn is, on all hands,
sublime. Beyond the ferry, the hills, covered with
woods and pastures, rise gradually to a considerable
height, and decline to the south-west, where the
lochs of Leven and Linnhe unite; in that
direction, the eye, gliding over a vast expanse
of water, is arrested by immense groups of mountains
of different forms and heights in Morven, which
compose an admirable landscape. About 4 miles
eastward are the stupendous mountains of Glenco.
Such variety of ground and interesting scenery is
not perhaps to be found in any other part of
Scotland". (Playfair Vol [Volume] 2 p. [page] 15) Ballachulish
ferry is 5 miles from Corran ferry; 16 miles from
Kings House; 14 from Fort-William; 31 from
Tyndrum by the Glenco road; 45 from Fort-
Augustus; and 61 from Inverary by the Military
road.

Chapel [note]
"The upper parts of Appin belonged at some remote period
to the parish of Eleanmunde or Island of Saint Munde who was
abbot and confessor in Argyle about the middle of the 10th. century.
The island of St. Munde is situated in Lochleven near the place
where the River Cae discharges itself into the Loch. It contains
the ruins of a Church, which from the style of its architecture
does not appear to have been of a very ancient date, & accordingly
although the inhabitants of Glencoe and Onich belong now to different
parishes still they bury their dead in the burying ground of their
original Parish at Eleanmunde. It is not improbable that after
the reformation the peoples who disclaimed everything Popish
would pull down the Church of St. Munde & build on its ruins

It may be observed in this place that the Island of

of Fassfern and Callard on the north side of Loch Leven,
and of Mr McDonald of Glencoe on the south side &
that these gentlemen have within the last few years
planted it, which in a few years hence will give it
an interesting and romantic appearance"
New Statistical Account
"The Church dedicated, as its name implies to Saint Mund
stood on the Island in Loch Leven. Its ruins remain & its
cemetery, still in use consists of two Knolls, one of which
is appropriated to Glencoe, and the other to Lochaber. It has
sometimes been styled a Monastery. Father Hay says that
it was a Monastery of obscure cenobites, who declined intercourse
with society, & preferred the quiet of a solitary life to all
temporal privileges". Origines Parochiales
"Island Mund signifies the Island of St. Mungo, a small
island in Loch Leven dedicated to that Saint. The island has
been long the common cemetery or burying place of the inhabitants
of Glenco." Old Statistical Account |

A small creek, situated on the east side of Lismore, and about 1/2 mile north of "Tirefoor Castle". There is a tradition in Connection with this port to the following effect: - St. Colomba, and his disciple St. Moluac, were on a Missionary tour from Iona to the King of Ross. When their boat or rather, "Curragh" came opposite to Tirefoor Castle, and seeing that, that portion of the island was thickly inhabited, the good Saint landed Moluac at the first Convenient place, with the view to the conversion of the natives. In this, it is said, he was successful beyond all expectation, and, in a short time, built a Chapel: - the site of which is still pointed out by the old people. But no traces of it are now to be seen. |

A small Cave, in the face of a cliff, situated on the west side of the Island of Lismore, and about 150 yards south of "Uamh an Cathag". A very conspicuous height about 1/2 a mile north east of Torr Darach. It is thickly covered with natural wood, and from its commanding position would appear to have been a place of defence, or watch tower. At the south end there is still to be traced the remains of a wall of loose stones, about 3 feet in thickness. The east and west sides are protected by a small ridge of rocks tapering away to a point at the north end. - Mr McNiven one of the authorities states that his father (now deceased) pointed out a grave to him on the summit about 30 years ago, but as he was then a boy and did not pay much attention to it he never was able to

A small reef nearly covered at high water, about half a mile south of the Lighthouse.
"Between the island of Lismore and the Coast of Mull lies a Rock known by the name of 'The Ladys Rock', of which the following historical anecdote is related. Lauchlan Cattanach Maclean of Dowart had married Lady Elizabeth, daughter to Archibald, Second Earl of Argyll, and either from the circumstance of their union being unfruitful, or more probably owing to some domestic quarrels, he determined to get rid of his wife. Some accounts say that she had twice attempted her husbands life; but whatever the cause may have been, Maclean, following the advice of two of his vassals, who exercised a considerable influence over him from the tie of fosterage, caused his lady to be exposed on a Rock, which was only visible at low water, intending that she should be swept away by the return of the tide. From this perilous situation, the intended victim was rescued by a boat accidently passing, and conveyed to her brother's house". * * * *

The dates in the inscription are calculated in the Roman way, by subtraction from Kalends, Nones and Ides, with some reservations:
John Chisholm was born on 12 Feb 1752, or pridie Idus Februariis MDCCLII, not as given here.
And he was consecrated bishop on 12 Feb 1792 - I have taken Nonis to mean 9th, but if it means Nones that would be 5 Feb. |
