The united parish of Kilninver & Kilmelfort is situated in the County of Argyll. it is bounded on the North by Loch Feochan, and the parish of Kilmore and Kilbride, on the East by the parishes of Kilchrenan and Dalamich, on the South by the parish of Craignish, and on the West by the parish of Kilbrandon and Kilchallan & the Atlantic Ocean.
"The name Kilninver is compounded of five gaelic names viz Kil, a burying place, and inbher (inver)the foot of the river or water; which is disciptove of the situation of the ancient burying place or chapel from which the name of the parish is derived.- Kilnamaolphord, or Kilnameallard, or Kilnameallphord, contracted Kilmelford, Signifies either the burying plan of the Smooth or round bays, or according to some,the promontory's bay. There being a high and rocky point of land jutting out into the head of Loch Melford, forming on each side two round bays."
