172 A name seemingly well known applied to a level spot of ground immediately east of the Bridge. It is said to have been the scene of a conflict between the Norwegians under the command of Meckan (Son of Magnus, King of Norway), and the Gaels & others, (not known). It is reported that the chief (Meckan) fell during the struggle & his reputed grave is to be seen a little to the South of Lochead, close to the road. Sig. [Signification] A place of hardship.
