This Castle withstood the ravages of the celebrated Coll Macdonnell, alias Coll Ciotach i.e. left handed Coll & his followers when he invaded Argyleshire, who finding that it was impregnable proceeded northward along the Strath of Kilmartin towards Athnacra, near the ford of Lochawe, destroying and plundering everything in his way on the estates of Duntroon, Rassly & Kilmartin, and carrying away all the cattle with the exception of one dun cow. This cow is still known by the natives by the name of Bo-Mhaol othar Achabhean ie the humel dun cow of Achaven.
